There is a new wave of veterans returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who are ready, willing and waiting to join the ranks of VFW veterans. The VFW currently consists of more than a million members, but lately, only around 8,000 of them worked on recruiting at least one new member. It is imperative that the organization puts forth more effort to recruit the new members, because every person who joins is a vote on Capitol Hill.
Here at VFW Post 4174, located 25 S. Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, we wish to let any veteran know our doors are open to them and we have many programs instituted to assist them in their transition from the military to civilian life. We are happy to welcome them to our ranks and feel they will benefit from becoming a member. Because of this belief, we need to focus more on recruiting the new generation of veterans.
The best way to conduct successful recruiting is by being visual, conducting more recruiting drives, constantly carrying an application in your pocket or purse, and by displaying passion through respect for all the generations we will rebuild. Displaying a good vibe is another good example which will have its inception from the top. The time to focus on the new generation is now while not forgetting the old.
It is helpful also, to let a possible recruit understand what can be done by the VFW to help them. A big aid is the VA claims & separation benefits, or informing them of financial grants, having them learn about the student veterans support and mental wellness programs. The VFW is big on community, sponsoring and supporting youth and education, initiatives and flag etiquette. It is an organization that believes in comradeship, the promoting of brotherhood, and the sharing of pride in having served and fought for the many freedoms we have long enjoyed.
