2023 Product Calendar — The U.S. Census Bureau has posted anticipated release dates for each regular and recurring statistical product scheduled for release in 2023. These products are listed in the U.S. Census Bureau’s online product calendar, which is updated as needed throughout the year.
National Advisory Committee 2023 Virtual Spring Meeting — The U.S. Census Bureau will host the National Advisory Committee Spring Meeting on May 4-5. The Committee will address policy, research, and technical issues relating to a full range of Census Bureau programs and activities, including the decennial census, demographic and economic statistical programs, field operations, and information technology. Employment and Labor Force Characteristics of Same-Sex and Opposite-Sex Married Householders and Their Spouses — The Census Bureau will release an updated table package, Employment and Labor Force Characteristics for Same-Sex and Opposite-Sex Married Householders and Their Spouses, with statistics from the 2021 American Community Survey. Data are available at the national and state levels and for 15 selected metropolitan areas. Statistics include key employment, labor force and work status statistics broken down by race and Hispanic origin for same-sex and opposite-sex spouses. (Scheduled for release April 20.)
Estimates of U.S. Population by Age and Sex — A downloadable file containing July 1, 2022, estimates of the resident U.S. population by single year of age and sex will be released on the Population and Housing Unit Estimates webpage at . In the coming months, the U.S. Census Bureau will release additional population estimates for cities and towns, as well as national, state and county population estimates by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin. (Scheduled for release April 13.)
2022 Voting and Registration — The U.S. Census Bureau will release new data on voting and registration from the 2022 Current Population Survey November Voting and Registration supplement. These data provide information on method of voting, reasons for not participating in the election, and demographics of voters. The statistics presented are based on responses to survey inquiries about whether individuals were registered and/or voted in specific national elections. (Tentatively scheduled for release in April.)
Household Pulse Survey — The experimental Household Pulse Survey is an effort by the U.S. Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies to provide near real-time data on how the social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent issues are affecting people’s lives to inform federal and state response and recovery planning. Data collection for phase 3.8 will begin March 1, with data dissemination, including detailed data tables and public use data files, on a monthly basis. (Scheduled for release April 19 and May 17.)
School Pulse Panel — The Census Bureau has begun collecting data from schools for the new School Pulse Panel (SPP) as part of efforts to monitor the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students and staff in U.S. public schools. The SPP, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics, collects data on instructional mode offered, learning loss mitigation strategies, staffing levels, safe and healthy school mitigation strategies, use of technology and more. 2022 Economic Census Responses Still Being Collected — The due date to respond to the 2022 Economic Census was March 15. Though the deadline has passed, the U.S. Census Bureau is still collecting responses. We understand this is a busy time of year for many businesses and those that received the economic census may not have had a chance to respond yet. The window to complete the 2022 Economic Census is still open and businesses that require an extension can do so. Minnesota’s Aging Workforce and How It Compares to Other States Using Census Data – The U.S. Census Bureau and the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership in collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) and the Labor Market Information (LMI) Institute, welcomes Tim O’Neill as he presents, “Minnesota’s Aging Workforce and How It Compares to Other States Using Census Data.” U.S. Census Bureau’s Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) along with other resources, allows economist to track Minnesota’s aging workforce over several decades. This trend will continue to be seen as the baby boomer generation continues to age unless there is an increase in immigration or an unlikely increase in birth rate. The following presentation is based on a recent article that reveals how Minnesota’s share of older workers has shifted in recent history, as well as how this aging compares with other states and the nation. Exploring Census Data Webinar Series: Using Census Data to Guide Business Decisions — Census Bureau subject matter experts will present data available from the Business Formation Statistics, Annual Capital Expenditure Survey and the American Community Survey. They will share different types of data available from these programs that can help guide business decisions. Discover statistics on business births and how the data can be used to determine entrepreneurship. Presenters will dive into business expense data along with information on the workers within business sectors. The session explains how to access the data and illustrations on how to use the data. There will be an opportunity to connect with our experts via live chat and during the Q&A segment of the webinar. This webinar is the first of six in a series designed to help data users explore Census Bureau data on America’s people, places and economy. (Scheduled for April 20.)
2021 County Business Patterns — The Census Bureau will release County Business Patterns (CBP). The upcoming annual series release provides 2021 subnational economic data by industry (2- through 6- digit NAICS). These data include detailed information on the number of establishments, employment during the week including March 12, and first quarter and annual payroll at the national, state, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical area, combined statistical area, county and congressional district levels for nearly 1,000 NAICS industries. Data for Puerto Rico and the Island Areas are also available at the state- and county-equivalent levels. (Scheduled for release April 27.)
2021 Annual Capital Expenditures Survey — The U.S. Census Bureau will release data from the Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES) covering data year 2021. Tables will show the impact on budgeted capital expenditures and the use of capital expenditures to fund investments related to social distancing and safety for companies with employees in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. All data will be available at the national level by 2-digit NAICS industry. (Scheduled for release April 27.)
Management and Organizational Practices Survey — The U.S. Census Bureau will release new 2021 data from the Management and Organizational Practices Survey (MOPS). MOPS is conducted to help better understand current and evolving management and organizational practices and to assist in identifying determinants of establishment and productivity growth. MOPS provides information on the dimensions of organizational capital for the manufacturing sector and collects information on management and organizational practices at the establishment level from the Annual Survey of Manufactures. (Tentatively scheduled for release in April.)
Business Trends and Outlook Survey — The Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS) measures business conditions on an ongoing basis. BTOS experimental data products are representative of all single-location employer businesses in the U.S. economy, excluding farms. The data allows greater insight into the state of the economy by providing continuous, timely data for key economic measures. Data are released biweekly and available by sector, state and the 25 most populous metropolitan statistical areas.
Monthly Business Formation Statistics — Business Formation Statistics (BFS) provide timely and high-frequency data on business applications and employer business formations monthly. The data are available at the state, regional and national levels and by industry sector at the national level. The next monthly BFS release is April 17 and will include March 2023 data. NEW Executive Leadership Corner — As part of ongoing efforts to improve the census.gov user experience, the Census Bureau has launched the “Executive Leadership Corner.” The new section features individual biographical pages for the Census Bureau director, deputy director and associate directors as well as official photos and content by directorate or program areas. The Executive Leadership Corner also includes relevant news products such as news releases, public presentations and remarks, directorate announcements and blogs.
Census Bureau Invites Public Input on Proposed Disclosure Avoidance Measures for the County Business Patterns Program — April 3 — The U.S. Census Bureau published a Federal Register Notice inviting the public to review and submit feedback on proposed modernized disclosure avoidance methods for 2022 County Business Patterns (CBP) data. The 60-day comment period will close June 2. The Census Bureau is hosting a webinar for the public about its disclosure avoidance methods and how they apply to CBP data.
Special Census Program Resumes — March 30 — The U.S. Census Bureau began accepting requests for special census cost estimates. The Special Census Program is offered each decade to provide local jurisdictions with an enumeration of their population, housing units, group quarters and transitory locations between decennial censuses. The program previously closed on Sept. 30, 2018, to accommodate the taking of the 2020 Census. The program resumes and will conclude by Sept. 30, 2028, ahead of the 2030 Census.
Census Bureau Releases 2020 Census Results of Racial Identification for the Self-Reported Hispanic or Latino Population — March 28 — The U.S. Census Bureau released results showing how people who identify as being of Hispanic or Latino origin (referred to as the Hispanic population) self-reported their race in the 2020 Census. Census Bureau Announces Schedule Updates for 2020 Census Data Products — March 27 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced updates for upcoming 2020 Census data products. Among them, the Census Bureau plans to release the Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC) and Demographic Profile May 25. These 2020 Census data products provide demographic and housing characteristics of local communities.
New 2021 Journey to Work Report — April 6 — The U.S. Census Bureau released a new report, Home-Based Workers and the COVID-19 Pandemic, that describes trends in working from home during 2019 and 2021. The report uses data from the 2019 and 2021 American Community Survey 1-year estimates to describe sociodemographic, occupational and geographic patterns associated with working from home during the year before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the first full year after the pandemic’s onset.
County and Puerto Rico Municipio Population Estimates: July 1, 2022 — March 30 —Internet tables and detailed downloadable files show annual population estimates and rankings for counties and Puerto Rico municipios, and components of change for counties since the 2020 Census. Spanish
OnTheMap Update and 2020 LODES Data — April 4 — The U.S. Census Bureau released an updated version of its Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) data product. The 8.0 version of LODES add data for 2020 and recast all historical LODES years into 2020 census blocks. The OnTheMap application is updated to include these new LODES tabulations that will contain 19 years of data from 2002 to 2020.
2023 Local Employment Dynamics Partnership Virtual Workshop — March 28-30 — Participants join us for our 2023 Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership Virtual Workshop with keynote speaker Jesse Rothstein, professor of public policy and economics Carmel P. Friesen Chair in public policy, faculty director, California Policy Lab, University of California Berkeley. This year’s theme, “LED: Big Data Illuminating Local Outcome,” highlights the work of our state Labor Market Information (LMI) partners and other data users through plenary sessions. Census Business Builder Version 5.1 — March 30 — The U.S. Census Bureau released version 5.1 of the Census Business Builder tool. These updates improve users’ experience with the tool and feature enhancements including increased 508 Compliance, mobile optimization, stacked map variables, updated help menu and new styling for Geosearch and Zoom buttons.
